Meet Rebecca, our Business Development Manager (BDM) for our Queensland branch. She was recently honoured with the Awesome Women in Construction Award (AWIC) for Sales Extraordinaire. This well-deserved recognition is a testament to her exceptional skills and dedication, and we couldn’t be prouder of her.
Can you introduce yourself and tell us what your role is at Site HQ?
Rebecca Astin, I am the BDM for Site HQ Queensland. I am a wife celebrating 40 years together with Wal, mother of 2 girls and grandmother to 12 amazing grandchildren aged between 2 and 18. Mum to 3 dogs, 15 chickens and love the life in SALES.
How long have you worked in the Construction Industry?
I started in the Construction industry in 1998, and since then had a multitude of roles but all in sales over 3 companies.
And what drew you to work in Construction?
Purely by chance, I am a chef by trade and wanted a 9-5 role as nights and weekends as a chef became too much with a young family, but I did take to it like a duck to water. My first role was internal sales, but very quickly moved to external sales and never looked back.
How did you become involved with Awesome Women in Construction (AWIC)?
Amanda Bulow the founding member of AWIC was one of my customers, we networked within our reach of Fellow Women in the industry but in our catch-ups, we decided that we needed to create a platform that celebrates, supports and encourages women in our industry. Hence AWIC was born.
What does the Awesome Women in Construction (AWIC), Sales Extraordinaire Award mean to you?
To be honest, it is a humbling award, to be recognised for my contribution to the industry, my achievements and my strong results. I really am blessed to be in a position, and industry, that I feel so comfortable, challenged and rewarded in.
What advice would you give to women looking to start a career in Construction?
OMG, the list for that is way too long, but I would say it is such an interesting industry, there are so many opportunities here for women, not just young women but for us later in life also. Women really can support, grow, encourage and celebrate each other so well. AWIC is another avenue that raises women up as well as showcases the multitude of roles and careers available.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I work in a team, if I don’t have that support, I couldn’t do what I do. I work quite autonomously at times, hunting, chasing and delivering opportunities and orders for Site HQ Qld. My team then make the magic happen; they deliver what I promise!
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
That one is easy, the chase, the win and the team.
What’s your favourite part of your job?
Getting customers on board to use us when they really weren’t looking for an alternative, to showcase our Site HQ brand and have that convert not only into opportunities but orders ongoing. I love being able to deliver total site solutions pairing with our Hire Teams.
What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned throughout your career?
I try to be transparent, am honest and will always put my heart and soul into my role, it is personal for me to build long lasting relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
If you could provide your 20-year-old self some advice, what would it be?
You need to be happy when you get up in the morning, AND it is OK to change your mind, to experiment in different career paths. No one job is the be all and end all, dip your toes in the water as many times as you want, the perfect career is out there for you to find, enjoy the journey 😊
